Description
In Greek : Kράνος στρατιώτες / Oπλίτες (correct me if I am wrong !)It was a blast ! Culture, food, people... Everything (and everyone) was great !
So I will upload some stuff about this trip.
Feel free to download for personal use but ask me if you wanna use it on your website ! Thank you
This photo has been taked at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (that is not located far away
from the bus station you have to go to take a bus to Sounion ).
These heads of helmeted warriors have been found near the temple of the goddess Aphaea on the island of Aegina that
harboured a city that once was one of the greatest enemies of Athens.
During the First Persian war, Aigina submitted to Persia. The Athenians tried to punish this act but were repelled by the fleet of the island.
In 480 BC, Aigina sided with Athens and its vessels helped Greece win over Persia. It seems the role of the islanders in the victory of Salamis
has been minimised afterwards, as Athens tried to consolidate its own power in the Aegean Sea...
In 458-456 BC, Athens finally got the upper hand and integrated Aigina into the Delian League after a successful siege.
The islanders were expelled in 431-430 BC and Aigina became a cleruchy (an Athenian colony).
Don't forget the Aiginetans !
